onlyemma's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

yes, I'm from ITV *cough* work experience *cough*

I've been spending a very tiring week at ITV Yorkshire. I have no idea how people actually survive having actual jobs that last from the morning to the evening. I can barely cope.

I've been in the gallery shadowing the vision mixer on Emmerdale. I looked round all the sets and sat in the Woolpack for a few minutes on my lunch break. They serve actual beer in there. When I was on set one afternoon for the filming, one of the actors said "I'm going to be pissed by the end of this. Bloody Woolpack days". What a job.

I'm having fun at Emmerdale, it's very weird to be walking down a corridor and seeing one of the characters walking down the other side. Yesterday I was in the lunch queue for the canteen, standing between Louise Appleton and Edna Birch.

Oh yeah, and guess who smiled and gave me a nod in the canteen on Monday! Alex, who used to play Lee in Hollyoaks! I wasn't sure why he smiled and nodded at me, but it was nice. Then he said 'seeya' when he left the cafe set yesterday, but I was acting aloof and pretended to be interested in a camera so he didn't think I was star struck.

I was also attempting to look slimmer by not putting my whole weight on the chair I was sitting on, so my thighs didn't spread out so much.

That boy's been around the Hollyoaks girls, I must look like a giant potato to him. And possibly very weird. Hovering above a chair.

So anyway, today's my day off because it's Thursday so everyone goes up to the village to film the exterior shots. I'm glad I get today off though because I'd have to be in Leeds for 7.30am and yesterday I wanted to just curl up in a corner of the gallery and fall asleep; It's so lovely and dark and tranquil in there. Or maybe if there was a prop bed to have a lie down on, I would have tried it out.

I'm dreading getting up so early tomorrow. I spent a lot of time in bed today to try and somehow store my sleep up and charge my batteries to full power so I can still feel energised when I'm up early in the morning.

Though it's not like I do much when I'm in the gallery, that would make me tired. Actually I do nothing at all, which is why it's called 'shadowing'. But I want to show enthusiasm, so I go through the script I'm given with a pencil and mark the camera changes and basically do everything the vision mixer does, minus pressing the buttons or going home to her family.

Showing enthusiasm is a tiring job. Vision mixing is a tiring job too. Especially when people mess up their lines and they have to go through the whole scene again. Bloopers don't seem quite so funny when it means you delay lunch break by 10 minutes.

But despite being so hopelessly tired, I think I'd like to go into vision mixing. Sitting in the gallery and watching the vision mixer makes my arms tingle. I'm sure that must be a good thing; it's not like pins and needles.
